Chapter 6 - The Bear on the Bookshelf

The next morning, Arthur placed his vitamin organizer on the breakfast table and left the room as though he had forgotten his glasses. He watched from the hallway mirror while Vanessa entered the kitchen.
She checked the doorway. Then she removed the bottle of Arthur’s prescribed supplements and carried it to the counter. From her robe pocket, she took a small packet of tablets. She studied the label, frowned, and poured several into her palm.
Arthur’s pulse quickened, but he did not move. Vanessa returned the original bottle to the cabinet and slipped the packet into the trash beneath coffee grounds.
He waited until she left before calling Miriam. “She has switched something,” he said. “I saw her handle a packet, but I did not see what it contained.”
“Do not touch the bottle or the trash,” Miriam replied. “A licensed medical professional and the police evidence team will handle collection. We need to protect you without creating contamination or putting Sophie in the middle.”
Arthur looked toward the library, where Sophie was drawing at the small desk. “I need something that shows what she is doing.”
Miriam hesitated. “If a camera is used, it must be placed in a lawful location and operated by an adult. Do not ask Sophie to investigate or confront Vanessa.”
Arthur understood. He had already arranged a small security camera for the library because it held financial records. The camera was legal, visible in the room, and normally used to protect the house. He could position it toward the bookshelf without recording private spaces such as bathrooms or bedrooms. But Sophie had asked earlier whether her teddy bear could sit there while she worked.
Arthur knelt beside her. “Would you like to put Bluebell on the bookshelf today?”
Sophie hugged the stuffed bear. “Why?”
“Because I want you to have something comforting nearby. I will handle the camera that watches the library. You do not need to touch it, check it, or think about what it records.”
Sophie considered this. “Can Bluebell see the door?”
“A little.”
“Then she can keep me company.”
Arthur placed the teddy bear on the shelf and adjusted the approved camera himself. He explained to Sophie that she should tell him immediately if Vanessa frightened her, and that the bear was not a secret messenger. “Your job is to play, draw, and stay near safe adults,” he said.
“Even if Aunt Vanessa is mean?”
“Especially then.”
That afternoon, Vanessa became almost affectionate. She brought Sophie a pink sweater and announced that they would bake cookies together. Sophie stayed near Arthur until he assured her he would be in the adjoining room.
The camera recorded Vanessa entering the library while Arthur was outside speaking with the gardener. She carried the vitamin bottle in one hand and a blister pack in the other. She looked toward the door three times.
“Just enough,” she murmured. “He needs to be slow, not dead.”
She opened the bottle, removed the original tablets, and inserted pills from the blister pack. Then she replaced the cap and slipped the original tablets into her pocket.
Arthur watched the recording with Miriam and Detective Elena Brooks that evening. Miriam stopped the video before anyone spoke about the medical contents.
“We do not identify the substance from appearance,” she said. “The bottle and tablets go to the lab. The video establishes handling and substitution, not medical effect. That distinction matters.”
Detective Brooks nodded. “We can collect them under proper procedure. Mr. Hale, did you take any of the altered tablets?”
“No.”
“Good. Do not take anything from that bottle. Your doctor can replace the medication and document the change.”
Arthur felt a cold anger move through him. “She said she wanted me slow, not dead.”
“That is still dangerous,” Brooks said. “We will let the evidence and medical experts determine the charge.”
Sophie sat beside Arthur in the office but did not watch the video. He had kept the screen turned away from her. When he returned, she saw his expression and reached for his hand.
“Did Bluebell help?” she asked.
“You helped by telling the truth and staying safe. The adults handled the rest.”
“Will Aunt Vanessa know?”
“Not yet.”
That night, Arthur removed the altered bottle from the kitchen only after Detective Brooks photographed and collected it according to procedure. His doctor prescribed a safe replacement and checked him thoroughly. The lab would determine what Vanessa had used. Nobody guessed, and nobody treated the recording as more than it proved.
Near midnight, Arthur heard a car turn into the driveway. He saw Grant Mercer step out carrying a black leather folder.
Vanessa opened the front door before he knocked.
Arthur guided Sophie into the guest room and called Detective Brooks. “They have arrived earlier than expected.”

From the hallway, he heard Vanessa whisper, “Tonight, he signs.”
Arthur looked at the teddy bear on the bookshelf. Its stitched smile was innocent, but the camera had captured the truth.
