Chapter 5 - The Price of a CareerCeleste's attorneys began digging.

What they uncovered reached far beyond Helena.

New Horizons Family Placement had never been a legitimate adoption agency.

It was a network.

A private hospital administrator.

A family lawyer.

A former nurse.

Two intermediaries.

And wealthy clients willing to pay for babies whose paperwork came with fewer questions than normal adoption channels allowed.

Nora had not been the only child.

There were at least eleven suspicious placements.

The connection to Celeste came through Arthur Bell, the head of Meridian Studios at the time.

Meridian had invested heavily in Celeste's career.

A pregnancy scandal involving a twenty-year-old actress marketed to teenage audiences was considered financially dangerous.

Helena had asked Bell for help.

Bell connected her to New Horizons.

Then the machine went to work.

Hospital records were altered.

A false death certificate was created but never entered into the state registry.

Celeste's consent form was forged.

And Nora disappeared.

But one mystery remained.

Evan.

Celeste hired a retired federal investigator named Daniel Cross.

Three weeks later, he returned with a folder.

“Evan did accept money.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

“So my mother told the truth.”

“Part of it.”

Cross placed a bank record down.

Evan received the money.

Then transferred almost all of it to a private investigator.

Celeste stared.

“He wasn't taking a payoff.”

“No.”

“He was investigating.”

Cross nodded.

Evan had suspected the baby was alive.

He discovered New Horizons.

He located Julia and Thomas Bennett.

But before he could contact them, someone warned Helena.

Evan received threats.

Then traveled to France for a film audition.

His rental car went off a mountain road.

Official conclusion: accident.

There was no evidence proving otherwise.

But Cross found something else.

Three days before his death, Evan mailed a package to his older sister.

Her name was Rebecca Ross.

She still had it.

Celeste met Rebecca in a quiet restaurant outside Los Angeles.

Rebecca looked at her with years of contained anger.

“You believed he abandoned you.”

“Yes.”

“He believed you signed away the baby.”

Celeste's eyes filled.

“That's what my mother told him?”

“Yes.”

Two young parents.

Each told the other had chosen career over family.

Each grieved separately.

Rebecca placed a small cassette recorder on the table.

“Evan left this.”

Celeste pressed play.

His voice emerged through static.

“Claire, if you ever hear this, I don't think our daughter died.”

Celeste stopped breathing.

“I don't know whether you signed anything. I don't know what your mother told you. But I found the family who took her.”

Nora.

Alive.

Sixteen years earlier.

“I haven't contacted them because I need proof before I destroy another family.”

Celeste pressed a hand against her mouth.

Then Evan said:

“If you gave her away willingly, I'll accept it. But if you didn't…”

A pause.

“I'll bring her home.”

The recording ended.

Celeste cried until Rebecca moved around the table and held her.

Two women who had spent fifteen years believing different lies about the same dead man.

Later that evening, Nora listened too.

“He was my father?”

“Yes.”

“Did he want me?”

Celeste handed her the recorder.

“You should hear him answer that himself.”

Nora listened.

When it ended she sat silently.

Then asked:

“Why would your mother do all this?”

Celeste looked through the window.

“Because she believed losing me would be worse than destroying me.”

Nora frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“No.”

Celeste took her hand for the first time.

Nora did not pull away.

“Control rarely does.”

The following morning, the story broke publicly.

Not because Celeste leaked it.

Someone else did.

Headlines exploded:

CELESTE VALE SECRET DAUGHTER SCANDAL

ACTRESS'S MOTHER ACCUSED OF ILLEGAL ADOPTION

DEAD ACTOR INVESTIGATED BABY DISAPPEARANCE

And then something worse.

A photograph of Nora leaving Julia's house appeared online.

Someone had sold her location.

Celeste stared at the image.

The red carpet had followed her daughter home.

That was when she stopped thinking only like a victim.

Someone was still protecting the old machine.

And whoever it was had just made the mistake of targeting Nora.
